Weekly Class to start...

We are going to be starting a Weekly Class beginning the 2nd week in July.  This 2 hour class will be on Thursdays and will run for 6 weeks, then take a week off before beginning the next 6 weeks class.  There will be 3 class times:

  • 10 am - Noon
  • 1-3 pm
  • 6-8 pm

There's not a set project like we have for our other classes.  You just bring whatever project you are working on...or have laid aside because you've gotten stuck.  Lisa will be teaching this class and will help teach you the best way to do the various parts of your project.  You'll learn hands-on from your own project...as well as from the projects that others are making.  Lisa has worked at several yarn shops up in Michigan for about 14 years...so she really knows her stuff.  You can sign up for a 6 weeks class and then re-sign up for the next 6 weeks class to continue learning if you want.  You can continue doing this as long as you want or need to.  You'll be amazed at how much you can learn in just a few months of taking this weekly class.  The cost will be $50 for the 6 weeks...which comes to about $4/hour.

There are only 2 rules for this class:

  • You must work with yarn bought at The Yarn Haven.
  • You must come with a "Can Do" attitude.

So come to the shop and sign up for one of the time slots and then bring your knitted project and your basic knitting equipment to class on July 10.  If you don't currently have a project to work on, you can pick one the first day of the class.  These classes should fill up quickly, so don't delay!

Creatively Dyed Party...

On Tuesday, July 15 Dianne Lutz of Creatively Dyed Yarn will be our guest.  She is one of our newest vendors and is coming to spend the day with us.  She'll have her wonderful hand-dyed yarn & roving and will be giving 3 classes on hand-dyeing yarn.  Times for the classes will be:

  • 11 am
  • 2 pm
  • 5 pm

Because of the tremendous interest, we've had to add some more spots to these classes and we will only be taking sign-ups through Tuesday, July 1.  So if you're interested in taking her class, please come by the shop ASAP to register.  Cost is $20 for the 1 hour class and includes all of your supplies.  Be sure to wear old clothing and shoes.  Even if you're not taking one of Dianne's classes, be sure to stop by and see her yarns that day.

Summer Charity Project...

We have several local charities that we help, so this summer I'd like for us to help a charity that is trying to help children overseas.  Warm Woolies is a non-profit organization whose volunteers knit warm clothing for poverty-striken children who would otherwise suffer from the cold.  Their mission is to provide the very neediest children with wool sweaters, vests, hats, mittens, and socks.  In 2008 they are knitting for children living in orphanages in Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and on an Indian reservation in South Dakota.  Their goal for 2008 is to knit 7,000 pieces of warm wool clothing for these children. Check out their website for the details and free patterns.  Then grab some bulky weight yarn (or double worsted weight yarn) and let's start knitting for our summer charity project.

Thank you to those who donated items for one of our charity projects this past month:  Kathy, Pat, Sally, Lois & Joan

Classes for Children and Teens...

Special "Learn to Knit" or "Learn to Crochet" classes for children (ages 8-12) and teens will be given this summer for only $25 + supplies.  These are 2  hour classes which will be set up on an individual basis.  If your children or teens have been wanting to learn one of these crafts, just give us a call and we'll set up a class to teach them.

Coming in August...The Yarn Haven Olympics

The summer Olympics will be from August 8-24 this year.  Want to join us for The Yarn Haven Olympics during that time??  What you do is to pick a challenging knitting or crocheting project to work on.  You cast on during the opening ceremonies (August 8) and you must finish by the time the Olympic flame goes out (August 24).  That's 17 days to complete your project.  It's OK to do your swatch prior to August 8.  We'll consider it part of your "training".

Following the Olympics, we'll be having our Olympic Showcase.  From August 26-29, bring to the shop the finished project that you knitted or crocheted during the Olympics.  We'll need to know the specifics on your items...like what yarn you used, what pattern, size, etc.  We'll hang everything up with a number and folks can drop by on Saturday, August 30 to vote for their favorites.  We'll choose a winner for Best of Show (overall winner) as well as a winner in each of the categories (i.e. socks, sweaters, hats, etc.).  Winners will be announced Tuesday, September 2.  In order to place your item in our Olympic Showcase, we do ask that you have purchased your yarn from The Yarn Haven.  We are requesting this because your items will be so inspirational that our other customers will want to make them too.  We'll have a notebook with all the specifics on your project so folks can look up that information if they want.  So be thinking of what project you'd like to do for The Yarn Haven Olympics.  August 8 will be here before you know it.  If you need help thinking of a project, please stop by the shop and we'll try to help you.

Friday Night Knitting Club...

The FNKC meets on the 1st and 3rd Friday evenings of each month from 6-9 pm.  During the summer months, we will only be having regular FNKC nights...i.e. no special events on the first Friday of the month.  But be watching for new FNKC events starting back up in the Fall.  The FNKC is not an exclusive club...everyone is welcome...and there's no fee to join in!  Just bring your knitting or crocheting project AND a snack to share.

Girls' Night Out Workshop...
The next GNOW will be on Friday, August 29.  This workshop will be on "Knitting Tips".  Lisa is very knowledgeable about knitting and will talk about subjects like how to figure out where to put the buttonholes so they'll be evenly spaced, how to do a gauge swatch, how to make adjustments if you're not knitting to gauge, etc.  So come with a list of your questions, and if you have a project that you need help on, bring that as well.  You'll also need to bring a calculator, pencil, notepad, and a 4 x 4 swatch knitted in stockinette stitch.  You should leave this workshop with most of your questions answered, lots of new ideas, and be better prepared to tackle new knitting projects.  You will need to pre-register and pay for this workshop just like you do for our classes.  Cost will be $25.00.  Refreshments will be provided.  So mark your calendar and plan to come join us for a fun night of learning a lot of helpful tips that will make your knitting experience more enjoyable.

Block of the Month Club...
Joining our Block of the Month Club is a fun way to get to know fellow crafters while working with wonderful yarn.  You can "jump in" any month you want.  Each month you buy one skein of Malabrigo yarn and learn one stitch pattern.  The class is FREE with the purchase of the yarn.  At the end of 12 months you will have enough blocks to put together a unique & gorgeous sampler throw that will be an heirloom.  Classes will be from 1-2 pm on Tuesdays OR 1-2 pm on Saturdays.  Knitters, come on the 1st or 3rd Tuesday or Saturday of the month.  Crocheters, come on the 2nd Tuesday or Saturday of the month.  Pre-registration is required.  Prerequisite:  You must already know how to knit or crochet to attend this class.
Knitters, for the July class, please cast on 52 stitches (using size 8 needles) and knit 5 rows before coming to class.

Build a Class...
Do you want to learn how to do something, but don't see a class offered for that particular project?  Well, here is your chance to learn just what you want to learn with our "Build a Class".  Just tell me what you're wanting to learn and I'll design a class for that project.  We'll set a date sometime during the next month or two and put it in our newsletter so others can join us if they want.  So put on your thinking caps and tell me what you want to learn!!

KALs (knit-a-longs)...

Lace KAL - 6-8 pm on Thursdays starting May 29 (FREE)
